Just Winging It

This class has been truly been very informative. It has improved my knowledge of the history/context of orality and literacy. It has made me understand the importance of knowing when writing has first started way before our period. Or even social media! Normally we don't really consider about when writing started or how it was possible way before our time. What book I found most interesting so far from this class is Tom Standage's   Writing on the Wall: Social Media - The First 2,000 Years. It really brought refreshing insight on how social media/ writing has been happening since the very beginning, and I can't wait to get more in depth with the book. This class has inspired me to go to museums and see galleries consisting with Ancient Rome or Mesopotamia, since now I'll actually know what it is talking about.

After discussing in our class 03/06, Goody emphasizes the important distinction between primary and secondary groups.  Goody explains that in a primary group; a face-to-face group wouldn't need to write to each other. However a secondary group, (once you get a larger group, it will be harder to communicate therefore you would need to have written communication) This made me think about being apart of a secondary group where communication consists of more written and non verbal communication and that includes: cellphones. For example: With your family, how much do you verbally communicate? The other day my mother and I were eating and we were both on our cellphones. And it made me think how we've become apart of this age where cellphones play a massive role with communication.

While we had homework assignments of when writing was first developed, it inspired me to search into the whole human civilization timeline!!  so exciting right ? I mean think about.. This is the beginning of when human civilization STARTED!   I think it's really important to understand the general timeline of our human history in order to understand when writing was discovered, when famous literatures manifested, when ancient nations developed. And I don't think many people understand what came before our time.  So this timeline was one of the best examples that relates according to our class readings. What I found most interesting was the wall of china was built way before christ was born. Important things to know *So BC translates = "Before Christ" Which means the years before  Christ was born. After he was born the very next year became 1. AD  *Some people also say B.C.E which translates= "Before Common Era " to avoid christian references. ...
